The Young and the Restless' Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) fell off the wagon months ago, but the hardest fall still awaits her.
The CBS soap plans to take the beloved character through the ringer in the weeks to come, first with a moment when she hits the lowest point of her life thus far and then with an intervention by family and friends that's so intense, the soap decided to make it a standalone episode.
"Nikki hits the skids in a way that neither the fans [n]or anyone in Genoa City has ever seen," Scott tells TV Guide. "It's bad. It's low."
While fans may have a hard time watching the wealthy socialite's tumble to rock bottom, it's actually been a high point for the actress. "I don't know where [head writer] Chuck Pratt is taking this but, as a selfish actor, I do not want this intervention to be successful," she admits. "I have too much fun playing her as a drunk. There is a lot of humor in Nikki's sloppiness, and her drinking creates conflict. It's a soap! The fans don't want to see happiness. If Nikki sobers up and becomes June Cleaver, where is the drama in that? The intervention is as tragic and as real as it gets on TV."
To watch Nikki's downfall, be sure to tune in to Y&R as the episodes build toward her emotional standalone intervention on Thursday, May 28.
